Introductions of participants
70% >> teachers will know and be able to use technology, may not know how to integrate it
20% >> "No Freakin’ Way" teachers will not touch technology no matter how much you give them
10% >> teachers will take what you teach them, run with it and expand it
Should professional development be focused on the 10% and call it R&D? Why should we give to everyone? Build R&D into classrooms, buildings and districts.
School Net in Ohio spent huge dollars to put 3 computers in every teacher’s classroom yet it didn’t really work.
external image PICT0002.jpg
Teachers in the 70% need time to work with professional development, main motivation.
Discussion of the classroom of the future. Non-traditional learning is not going to go away. We need to have conversations with preservice and inservice teachers about the non-traditional world and need to accommodate it.

  • Photo iPods
Apple makes 3 types, Shuffle (1 Gb or less), Mini (4 GB), or Photo iPod (30 GB). Big iPod has color screen and can load photos. Can load data, songs, or pictures. Can load Keynote or PowerPoint presentations.
Peripherals: can get iPod AV cable to show presentations or slide showson TV or projector; iTrip will let you play your music on your car radio, several types of speakers available, special connector will let you hook camera directly to iPod for saving photos; remote control; all types of cases. Put foam covers on your earphones for better fit.
IPod has a dock. You can pull cable out of dock and connect directly to laptop through USB. Can also get one that has firewire on end (faster connection). Can power iPod by connecting to computer. Button on top is Hold, when it shows red, it means you can’t operate your iPod, should keep it on red when you are not using it. When iPod is connected to computer, don’t disconnect without dragging iPod icon on desktop down towards Trash can in Dock and it will turn into an Eject.
When you set up your iPod, fix it so that nothing happens automatically, and name your iPod appropriately. If iTunes is open, you need to select your iPod in the Source list and push the eject button next to the iPod.
How do you put something on your iPod? You should have some music in your Library.
Eject your iPod from iTunes. Insert a music CD. Can drag individual tracks to the Library. If you want whole CD, can drag CD icon up to Library. For now, drag 3 tracks to the library. Plug iPod back into computer. Click on Library, find song you want and drag it down to the iPod. Eject iPod, connect headphones, click on center button of Clickwheel to see music menu. Click on MENU on click wheel to go back to menus. Adjust volume by rolling finger around Clickwheel. Best volume on iPod for external speakers is about 3/4 of the way up. To pause, click button on bottom. To turn it off, hold the pause button down, then flip the Hold button on the top. Conserve battery by going down to Backlight on main menu and make it dark when you are playing music. Can use Shuffle Songs choice to hear random choices. Go into the Music menu and study the choices you have.
Last time you downloaded Ian Jukes from Apple Digital School. Figure out how to put Ian Jukes “book” into your iPod. For audio books and other spoken word, you want to make a new Playlist in iTunes to organize these so they will come up separate from your music in your iPod when you load it. Only actual Audio books will go into Audiobooks folder, they are in format .acc.
In iTunes, under iTunes in menu bar, go to Preferences and open. Click on iPod, see several tabs for iPod. Under Music, keep it on Manually manage; click Open iTunes; click Enable Disk Use. Click OK to finish.
Ian Jukes: need to put money into hardware, technical support, professional development, software, infrastructure. Most K-12 settings don’t put enough into professional development.
  • Put pictures in iPods
Everyone open iPhoto. See which albums you might like to use on iPod. Connect iPod and open iTunes. Go to Preferences from top menu bar. Click on iPod, click on Photos tab. Click on Synchronize photos, then choose albums. Do not choose Include full resolution if you want to save memory space.
Eject your iPod from the computer. Now on iPod you can choose Photos from menu and use click wheel to navigate and look at pictures you loaded.
iV. To share photos between computers
Open iPhoto, click on iPhoto, go down to Preferences. Click on Sharing. You can click on Share my photos, and then click selected albums, then everyone on network will be able to view or also pull pictures down.
You can share on iTunes, but you can’t pull the songs down because of copyright laws.
Sharing photos: if you want to keep the sharing within the classroom, you need to use a password that is only used for your class.
Practice with iPod: get photos from shared files, make an album for them, then use iTunes to add them to iPod.
  1. Sharing iPhoto books on our teaching:
When you choose Theme for a book, Portfolio gives you room to type quite a bit. Storybook, Collage allows this too.
To share your Book, go to File, Print. Choose pdf at this point to make a pdf file that can be printed or burned on CD.
When viewing Book in iPhoto, can increase size by looking at small blue slider on bottom right corner of screen.
  1. Voice recording
Attach iTalk into iPod. You will see Voice Memo Record or Cancel. This is a very simple microphone. Give students a better microphone to connect if you need high quality.
Record yourself and then Pause. If you click where it says Pause again, it will Resume. The iTalk works as a speaker when you play. You can Delete these Voice Memos from the menu (don’t have to go to iTunes). Ideas for using- when students are in field, they can make voice memos to record their observations; students can interview students about their learning or interview teachers; use to record at each spot you take a picture and combine later for a narrated slide show in iPhoto.
Attach iPod to laptop. You will see a message saying it detects new voice memos. You can add these memos to your iTunes to use.
On your laptop, find the voice memo you just created. Look in iTunes in Library. The name is a date and time, how do you rename the selection. Highlight it by clicking on it once. Then click on the name once. It changes color and you can type a new name. Now you can play it in iTunes.
On iPod, from Menu go to Extras. Choose Notes. Read Instructions. To set up your iPod to work for text notes, connect iPod to laptop and double-click iPod to see Notes folder. When you write a file, Save As .txt if you want it to work on your iPod.
You can also use your calendar to match up with iPod. Most calendar systems use vCards, so that will work.
Homework: add more music to your iPod.
  1. Go back into iTunes. Go to Music Store. Look on left side, you will see Podcasts and Audiobooks. Go to Audiobooks. You can go Search Music Store in top right hand corner to search for a book title.
Go to http://www.gutenberg.org/
to find free mp3s of classic books. These could be used in iTunes or iPod.
In iTunes go to Radio on left side. You can drag station you like into your Playlist.
Day 2
  1. Using iPod with a TV.
Connect iPod photo AV cable. TV should be on Channel 3, then push the Input or Aux until the Slide show appears.
On iPod, got to Photos, Slideshow Settings. On Music, choose Now Playing, on TV Out, set it to Ask.
On iPod, go to Main Menu, go to Music. Go to Songs, enter. Select a song, make sure it is playing. Go back to Menu. Go to Photos. Go to album. Wait for pictures to load. Enter on 1st photo, enter again to get it on monitor.
  1. Garage Band
When you start your new project, you should give your song a name, otherwise it will be called MySong.
Open GarageBand and show the loops. If the Loops are not visible at the bottom of the screen, click the eye logo at the bottom. Listen to loops and find one you like. Drag it to Tracks area. You can drag the track to the amount of time you want.
To add more instruments, choose another Loop to try. So if you have a guitar track and want to experiment with adding a World track: Click on the Track and push the large play button. Then click on the loop you are trying and you should hear both together.
To change Track Volume or Track Pan, Look under Tracks at your instrument, click the small black down arrow, you choose volume or pan. Then click in a sound track area and drag the marker up or down to change. Pan changes which speaker it comes from, Volume changes the volume.
Go to File – Export to iTunes. Your song will appear in your personal playlist.
Now go on Internet and find a midi. Change some of the tracks and try changing the beats. Double click on an instrument track and you can change how it sounds. Double click on the beat counter to raise or lower.
To start a new song, give it a name. It will save in Garage Band folder, or you can change to Music. When composing in GB, you should Quit all other applications. If you Lock each track, that will make it work better. Under Window, you can open a Keyboard or Musical Typing.
  1. In Safari, go to edcommunity.apple.com
Look for articles on Using GarageBand in the Classroom
